Three Bay City Errors Lead to Levittown Victory

PONY North Zone Champion Bay City, Michigan and Caribbean Zone Champion Levittown, Puerto Rico clashed Friday morning in the opening game of the 65th annual Colt World Series. In one of the more defensive games in recent Colt World Series history, Levittown defeated Bay City 4-1 in a game in which only four hits were recorded.
Levittown starting pitcher Alejandro Valiant shined on the mound, going five complete innings, allowing just one run on two hits with three walks, while striking out seven for the win. His relievers, Eddie Santiago and Joskar Feliciano held down the fort, completing the final two innings without allowing a hit.
Puerto Rico took advantage of three Bay City errors on the day. The first led to a run in the bottom of the first, when Juan Montero reached on an error by the Bay City second baseman, scoring Luis Hernandez from second base. Levittown added on in the bottom of the second. Abraham Arroyo walked and stole second, before Sebastian Zayas cashed him in on his single to left field (2-0).
The most significant hit of the game came in the bottom of the third for Puerto Rico. Montero hit a shot to the deepest part of the park (left centerfield) to record a triple. Feliciano then scored Montero on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to make it 3-0 in favor of the Caribbean Zone Champions.
Bay City countered Levittown in the top of the fourth, when Riley Day hit a triple. Day later scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 3-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Zayas hit a fly ball to right centerfield that was misplayed by the Bay City centerfield for another error. Zayas rounded second, third and came home to score on the error, putting Levittown ahead 4-1, which proved to be the final score.
Both teams combined to hit into four double plays on the day.
Following the win, Levittown advances to Game #11 Sunday at 4 p.m. CT/US to face the winner of Game #7 between the Netherlands and Brownsville, Texas/Marion, Illinois. The loss drops Bay City into the loser’s bracket. It will face the loser of Game #3 between Brownsville and Marion tomorrow at 9 a.m. CT/US in an elimination game.
