2022 World Series Championship Recap

Championship Game: Covina, CA 2, Marion, IL 3


Marion, IL’s offense started the game hot, keeping out ahead of Covina, CA to claim the 2022 Colt World Series title.


Marion started the game by taking a 3-0 in the first inning. A line drive single by Camden Raddatz put Marion on the board. With bases loaded, aggressive running brought in two runs off of a line drive single by Morgan Fricker.


In the following three innings, a defensive battle ensued. Neither team was able to score, leaving Marion still up 3-0 going into the top of the fifth inning.


Covina got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Marion walked Aiden Barcelo and Kevin Rubio, an error gave Rubio the opportunity to steal home, with Barcelo getting out at third shortly after to make the score 3-1.


Neither team scored in the sixth, with Covina eager to make up ground with their last ups in the bottom of the seventh.


With bases loaded and only one out, Douglas Zuniga hit a fly ball which was caught by Morgan Fricker in right field. Efrain Miranda scored just before Aiden Barcelo got out at third to end the game with a final score of 3-2, making Marion, IL, the area host team, the Colt World Series Champions.

2022 World Series Day Four Recap

Game Fourteen: Harlingen, TX 7, Southern Illinois 4


Harlingen, TX beat Southern Illinois 7-4, taking an early lead and protecting it to move on in the World Series.


Harlingen took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first. An error and reaching on an error allowed the Texas team to score three runs. A single by Aiden Douglas brought in two more runs to end the scoring of the inning.


Southern Illinois responded with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning. A single drove in their first run, with a line drive triple to left field by Aaron Sheffer scoring two runs to make it a 5-3 game.


A single in the bottom of the third extended Harlingen’s lead to 6-3.


Both defenses were strong in the fourth and fifth innings, as neither team was able to score a run.


In the top of the sixth, a single drove in a run for Southern Illinois, but a single by Harlingen in the bottom of the inning locked in Harlingen’s 7-4 win.

Game Fifteen: Greensboro, NC 9, Monterrey, MX 8

 

With elimination on the line, Greensboro, NC and Monterrey, MX battled in an eleven-inning showdown.

 

Monterrey scored first on a bases-loaded single to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

 

Greensboro claimed the lead in the bottom of the same inning. A single got Greensboro on the board. A walk tied the game 2-2. A reach on an error provided another scoring opportunity for Greensboro to take a 3-2 lead.

 

They extended their lead in the bottom of the second. An error by Monterrey’s catcher and a wild pitch made the score 5-2.

 

A sacrifice bunt by Jordan Saunders gave Greensboro a lead with a score of 6-2 in the bottom of the third.

 

In the bottom of the fifth, a sacrifice fly brought in Greensboro’s seventh run.

 

Monterrey evened the score in the top of the sixth inning. The scoring started with a fielder’s choice in the beginning of the inning. A triple by Humberto Cruz Guajardo put Monterrey one run shy of tying the game. A single tied the game at 7-7.

 

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ian McMillan of Greensboro hit a line drive triple to regain the lead with an 8-7 score.

 

Monterrey was not far behind, scoring on an error to retie the game at eight runs apiece.

 

Both teams’ defenses played hard with no runs scored by either team from the bottom of the seventh to the top of the eleventh.

 

Greensboro claimed the win to advance in the World Series with a walk-off by Ian McMillan with a final score of 9-8.

Game Sixteen: Covina, CA 14, Harlingen, TX 1

 

Covina, CA advances to the Championship game, beating Harlingen, TX in four and a half innings with a  14-1 score.

 

Covina’s offense started strong in the bottom of the first inning. A sacrifice fly drove in one right, with a single line drive scoring another to take a 2-0 lead.

 

They extended their lead to 5-0 in their next time at-bat. Doubles by Adrian Morales and Paul Montoya drove in two runs, with the fifth coming from a walk.

 

Harlingen scored in the top of the third inning on a walk to make it a 5-1 game.

 

In the bottom of the fourth, Covina scored an impressive nine runs. Their scoring started on a walk, but the remaining eight runs were scored on five singles to take a win with a final score of 14-1.

Game Seventeen: Marion, IL 8, Greensboro, NC 5

 

Marion, IL wins over Greensboro, NC in a late game to advance to the Championship game with a score of 8-5.

 

Marion scored in the bottom of the first on a single by Caleb Siebers to make it a 1-0 game, but Greensboro quickly returned the run on a double by Conner Smith.

 

In the bottom of the third inning, Marion took a 5-1 lead. A sacrifice fly by Ethan Golish broke the tie. Dawson Griffith and Jack Ford singled to drive in a combined three runs.

 

A hit by pitch with bases loaded made the score 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

 

Not slowing down, Marion extended their lead by two more runs. Drake Moss hit a fly ball triple to drive in one run, with Caleb Siebers hitting another single to make it an 8-1 game.

 

Greensboro tried to catch up to Marion in the top of the sixth inning. Nathan Billings was hit by a pitch, advancing the runners and scoring a run. A single by Wesley Clewis and a sacrifice fly by Angel Mora Valdes cut Marion’s lead to 8-4.

 

With only the top of the seventh inning left to try to get out ahead of Marion, Greensboro had a lot of ground to make up. A single by Greensboro’s Conner Smith scored the final run, making the final score 8-5 with Marion advancing to the Championship.

2022 World Series Day Three Recap

Game Ten: Southern Illinois 14, Saga, JP 8


Both teams battled back and forth for the win, but Southern Illinois’ seven-run inning in the bottom of the sixth allowed the host team to pull out a win.


Saga, JP started the game with a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A single by Hibiki Ashiya brought in the two runs.


On a single of their own, Southern Illinois cut Saga’s lead in half in the bottom of the first. 


In the bottom of the second, Drew Barrington scored on an error by Saga’s pitcher to tie the game. During the same at-bat, Southern Illinois took a 3-2 from a ground ball single.


Saga recaptured its lead in the top of the third. A line drive double to left field re-tied the game. An error and a walk provided them with a 5-3 lead. A single at the end made the game 7-3 in Saga’s favor. 


Southern Illinois cut Saga’s lead by scoring on an error in the bottom of the third.


Neither team scored in the fourth inning, but Southern Illinois made it a tie game in the bottom of the fifth. A triple by Drew Barrington scored three runs. An error scored the fourth run of the bottom of the fifth, making the score 7 apiece.


Saga scored in the top of the sixth, scoring their eighth and final run on a fielder’s choice.


In the bottom of the sixth inning, Southern Illinois scored seven runs to take the game. The scoring started with a walk, a wild pitch and a hit-by-pitch to take a 10-8 lead. Drew Barrington’s bat was still going strong, as he hit an inside-the-park home run to score three runs. 


A single later in the bottom of the sixth made the score 14-8, with Saga unable to make up enough runs in the top of the seventh.

Game Eleven: Aroma Park, IL 4, Greensboro, NC 5

 

Greensboro, NC may have taken a 4-0 lead in the first three innings, but a three-run comeback from Aroma Park, IL in the bottom of the seventh made for a close game.

 

Ian McMillan started off the scoring for Greensboro in the top of the first inning. With a runner on first, his inside-the-park home run made it a 2-0 game.

 

A bunt and an error allowed Greensboro to score another run in the top of the second.

 

In the top of the third inning, a line drive single to center field scored Greensboro’s fourth unanswered run of the game.

 

Late in the bottom of the fifth, Aroma Park got on the board with a ground ball single to left field.

 

Greensboro extended its lead to 5-0 on a ground out in the top of the seventh.

 

Aroma Park made the most of its last at-bat. A hit-by-pitch and a walk earned them two runs, with their fourth and final run coming from a line out to right field. Their efforts were not enough, as Greensboro won 5-4.

Game Twelve: Covina, CA 7, Harlingen, TX 1

 

Harlingen, TX got on the board first, but it would not be enough to pull out a win, losing to Covina, CA 7-1.

 

In the top of the inning, Harlingen scored on a single to take a 1-0 lead.

 

That lead held until the bottom of the third when Covina’s offense came alive. A line drive double to left field tied the game. A single brought in another run, with their third run coming from an error by Harlingen’s right fielder to make the score 3-1.

 

Covina extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth. A single drove in two runs to further their lead to 5-1. Then, a sacrifice fly added another run to their score. Jacob Nguyen hit a fly ball triple to right field to score Covina’s seventh run of the game.

 

Both teams’ defenses battled in the remaining innings, making the final score 7-1.

Game Thirteen: Monterrey, MX 4, Marion, IL 5

 

Marion, IL beats Monterrey, MX 5-4 in a come-from-behind game.

 

Monterrey scored first at the end of the first inning on an error to make it a 1-0 game.

 

After two scoreless innings, Monterrey increased their lead to 2-0. Their second run of the game was scored on a single in the bottom of the fourth.

 

Marion tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. A line drive triple by Cruz Harlan broke Marion’s dry spell. Harlan was brought in on a single to tie the game at 2-2.

 

In the bottom of the fifth, Monterrey reclaimed the lead on a single with a 3-2 score.

 

Marion’s offense had a strong showing in the top of the seventh inning. A sacrifice fly ball by Ethan Golish brought in the tying run. Later, a single brought in two runs to take a 5-3 lead.

 

Monterrey had the bottom of the seventh to get back out ahead of Marion. They scored on an error by Marion’s left fielder, but Marion’s defense was able to stop Monterrey, winning 5-4.

2022 World Series Day Two Recap

Game Six: Aroma Park, IL 8, Paderborn, GE 6


Aroma Park, IL got ahead early in the game and maintained its lead in a close game over Paderborn, GE.


Paderborn struck first, scoring on a single in the top of the first. Aroma Park evened the game at one apiece, scoring on a wild pitch.


Aroma Park’s offense had an explosive second inning, scoring five runs to take a 7-1 lead. Runs were scored on two walks, a single, an error and a fielder’s choice.


Paderborn tallied a run from a walk in the top of the third inning to make the score 7-2.


In the top of the fifth, Paderborn scored another run; this time from a single pop fly to right field.


In response, Aroma Park scored on a ground out to regain their five-run lead at 8-3.


Paderborn scored on a ground out of their own, making the score 8-4. They successfully held Aroma Park to 8 runs and tallied another two runs on a double to make the final score 8-6.

Game Seven: Saga, JP 3, Harlingen, TX 8

 

Saga, JP and Harlingen, TX battled for seven innings, but Harlingen came out on top.

 

Harlingen got on the board first with a single in the top of the first inning.

 

After neither team scored in the second inning, Saga scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the third. With runners on second and third, a line drive single to center field gave Saga a 2-1 lead.

 

The fourth and fifth innings had no runs by either team, but Harlingen was ready to score in the top of the sixth. A double and a single 3-2 in favor of the Texan team.

 

Saga was not backing down, though.

 

A single in the bottom of the sixth made it a tie-game at 3 apiece.

 

A crucial seventh inning played out in Harlingen’s favor. A single broke the tie, with a triple by Omar Banda Jr. giving them a 6-3 lead. They were not done yet, as Harlingen scored on a fielder’s choice and an error to make the score 8-3.

 

Saga tried to score more runs of their own but came up short, losing to Harlingen 8-3.

Game Eight: Marion, IL 9, Greensboro, NC 1

 

Marion, IL well-represented as the Area Host in their first game of the Colt World Series, beating Greensboro, NC 9-1.

 

Marion got on the board first, scoring on a fielder’s choice.

 

In the second, another fielder’s choice made it a 2-0 game. A triple by Cruz Harlan increased their lead, with a fourth run coming from an error.

 

Marion kept the scoring going in the bottom of the third inning. They scored on three singles, followed by a run on a fielder’s choice and an error on a fly out to make it a 9-0 game.

 

Greensboro’s only run of the night came from a single in the top of the fourth.

 

Neither team scored in the fifth or sixth inning, and Greensboro was unable to score enough in the top of the seventh, making the final score 9-1.

2022 World Series Day One Recap

Game One: Greensboro, NC 12, Aroma Park, IL 1

Greensboro, NC came up big to kick off the 2022 Colt World Series.


They started off strong, scoring 5 runs in the top of the first inning.


Greensboro built on and furthered its lead in the second and third innings, scoring one run in each and continuing to hold Aroma Park to no runs.


Aroma Park put themselves on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly with no outs helped prevent the shutout.


It would not, however, be enough momentum to help them get back in the game. Greensboro scored in the top of the fifth with a double and three in the top of the sixth to push past Aroma Park 12-1.

Game Three: Monterrey, MX 5, Paderborn, GE 4

 

Monterrey, MX may have come out on top, but Paderborn, GE certainly put up a fight. Three of Paderborn’s five runs came at the top of the seventh inning.

 

The scoring did not start until the bottom of the second inning. Juan Quintanilla Cardenas stole second and third base on wild pitches to be in scoring position when Gerardo Valdez singled on a ground ball to center field.

 

Paderborn answered in the top of the third. Lasse Nixdorf scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1.

 

Monterrey reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third. Andres Cantu scored on a wild pitch while Humberto Cruz Guajardo advanced to third. Juan Quintanilla Cardenas had a ground out, but Cruz Guajardo scored to make it 3-1.

 

Their momentum carried to the bottom of the fourth. Taking advantage of an error and a wild pitch, they scored on another ground out to further their lead.

 

In the bottom of the sixth inning, a balk and a walk by Paderborn’s pitcher set up another run for Monterrey.

 

Paderborn made the most of their last at-bat, scoring three runs on a double, a ground out and a single. It was not enough to take the win, as the final score was 5-4 in Monterrey’s favor.

Game Four: Covina, CA 6, Southern Illinois 1

 

Despite the first two innings being scoreless, Covina, CA beats the Southern Illinois team 6-1.

 

Covina broke the scoreless streak in the bottom of the third inning with a line drive double to left field to take a 2-0 lead.

 

In the top of the fourth inning, Southern Illinois chipped away at Covina’s lead, making it a 2-1 game.

 

A line drive triple to center field by Covina’s Jacob Nguyen re-established a 2-run lead, with a 3-1 score at the bottom of the fourth.

 

Covina continued to score in the bottom of the fifth inning. Another line drive triple, this time by Jacob Campos earned a run. With a single to bring him home, Covina took a 5-1 lead.

 

A ground out in the bottom of the seventh inning was all Covina needed to solidify their win at a final score of 6-1.
