Greensboro, N.C. claimed the East Zone title and will appear in the 2019 Colt World Series for the fifth straight year. North Carolina defeated Bronx, NY 10-4 in the East Zone Tournament held in Greensboro on July 24-27. 

In the championship game, North Carolina started the scoring on a three-run homer by Luke Jenkins. In the first three innings, they racked up 7 runs. Pitcher, Eli Wilen, powered the defense by only allowing two hits over three innings. However, in the top of the fourth, Wilen gave up three runs to New York. 

Going into the fifth inning, North Carolina still had the 7-3 lead. In the top of the fifth, the New Yorkers cut the lead in half, but were unable to score anymore the rest of the game. Greensboro racked up 12 hits and 10 runs to take the East Zone Championship Title. 

Previously in the tournament, North Carolina defeated Kempsville, Va. 12-2. On day two, Greensboro faced New York for the first time where they scored 24 runs and only gave up one. They came up with nine runs in just the first inning. North Carolina’s pitching stopped New York from hits; however, they were able to score on a wild pitch.

Greensboro has attended the Colt World Series 26 times with only one Championship Title. With that being said, North Carolina, as a state has appeared in the CWS 31 times. 

In the 2018 Colt World Series, Greensboro was defeated by Korea 5-4 in game one. However, they made it all the way to game 15 by beating Mexico and Covina, Calif. Ultimately, Greensboro was taken out of the running for the CWS title by Southern Illinois. 

Greensboro, North Carolina will face Covina, Calif. in game one on Aug. 2 at 9 a.m. CDT/US.

North Zone Qualifier

Marion and Southern Illinois




Team Marion and Team Southern Illinois will be back this year to compete for the Colt World Series Championship on August 2-7. This is the second year the Colt World Series will be held in Marion, Illinois at Rent One Park. 

In late June, tryouts were held to make up the two teams. Since then, the teams have had workouts several times a week, and have been playing games all of July. This past weekend, the two teams were combined to compete in five games in preparation for the World Series. The picture above shows the combined team. 

Todd Poe, owner of Future Swings an indoor hitting facility, will be the coach of the Southern Illinois team. 

Last year, Southern Illinois made it to the semi-finals by beating out Greensboro, North Carolina 7-5. However, in the semi-finals they were defeated by South Korea 5-1. 

Both teams will play their first games on August 2. Team Marion will face the South Zone Champion at 3 p.m. CDT/US and Team Southern Illinois will face Tijuana, Mexico at 8 p.m. CDT/US. 

The North, East, South, and West Zone tournaments will be held July 24-27. Stay tuned for more information on qualifying teams. 


Asia-Pacific Zone Qualifier

Japan to make its First Ever
Appearance in the 2019 Colt World Series in Marion, Illinois

For the first time in the history of the Asia-Pacific Zone, Okinawa, Japan, will travel to Marion, Illinois to compete in the 2019 Colt World Series August 2-7. Japan defeated, 2018 Colt World Series runner-up, Korea, 9-8 in a battle that went into extra innings.

The 2019 Asia-Pacific Zone Championship Tournament was held July 1-5 in Japan. The five teams that competed for the title were Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and India. The first three days of the tournament were canceled due to inclement weather. In just two days, Japan was able to lead their team to its first ever zone championship. 

In the championship game, Japan opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning on a double and single. However, in the second inning, Japan’s defense was unable to keep Korea down as they cut the lead to one. Japan scored in the top of the fifth in an attempt to maintain a 4-2 lead; however, Korea tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. 

Korea’s pitching struggled in the top of the sixth inning, walking three men, and ultimately Japan took back the lead 7-4. Once again, Korea tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a triple. However, Japan took back the lead to claim the title in the eighth scoring two runs and only giving up one to Korea to take the 9-8 victory. 

Prior to advancing to the Championship Game, Japan faced Korea in the first game of the tournament and was defeated 5-2. However in its second game, Japan’s offense took over scoring five runs in the first inning to beat New Zealand 12-2. 

Despite never being seen in the Colt World Series, Japan has appeared in other PONY World Series events. Japan participated in the Bronco World Series in 2017. Also in the Pony World Series seven times. Two of those times Japan finished as the runner up. In the 2013 Pony World Series, Japan took the title defeating Mexico 5-4, their only World Series Championship.

Japan will play its first game in the 2019 Colt World Series on August 3 at 3 p.m. CDT/US against the winner of game two, between the North Zone Champion and Brno, Czech Republic.

Caribbean Zone Qualifier

2018 Colt World Series Champions will return to Marion to fight for their third Championship Title

Back-to-back Caribbean Zone Champions, Levittown, Puerto Rico, will return to Marion, Illinois in an effort to become repeat Champions of the Colt World Series.

The defending champions defeated host Panama 1-0 on June 6 in the Caribbean Zone Tournament. The tournament began on May 31 in Panama City, Panama.

In the picture above, holding the flag are Luis A. Rivera, Sebástian Zayas and Adrian Colon. These three are among the 2018 Colt World Series champions and will be returning to Marion this August.

Zayas was named the MVP of the tournament and his teammate, John Mathew Vélez, received the best pitcher award.

In the championship game, the Puerto Ricans scored their only run early in the first inning by Hecniel Rodriguez. Their defense was able to hold back Panama Host with zero runs in seven innings to make their final record 6-0.

In their first game of the tournament, despite a rain delay, the Puerto Ricans pitched a shutout against the Panama Champs beating them 12-0.

On day two and three, they continued their undefeated record by beating the Dominicam Republic and Panama Host. Finally, the Puerto Ricans ensured their ticket to the Caribbean Zone Championship on day four by defeating the Panama Champs again, but this time the final score was 6-0. They scored two runs in the first, one in the fifth, and two in the sixth.

In the 2018 Colt World Series, The Puerto Ricans defeated Bay City, Michigan (4-1), The Netherlands (14-8), and Brownsville, Texas (7-4). Finally, they took the championship over Seoul, Korea with a final score of 5-4. The final game had fans on the edge of the seats as it came down to one final out to get the victory.

A team from Puerto Rico has attended the Colt World Series 42 with seven wins, the most appearances of any international team. Puerto Rico made its first appearance in 1970 when the World Series was held in Lafayette, Indiana. Levittown has attended the Colt World Series nine times with two championship titles.

Levittown is set to play its first game of the 2019 Colt World Series on Saturday, Aug. 3 at 8 p.m. CT/US against the winner of game one.

Mexico Zone Qualifier

Tijuana Wins the Mexico Zone with an Undefeated Record

Tijuana, Baja California won the Mexico Zone Championship on April 27 finishing the tournament with an undefeated record. The Mexico Zone Championship was held April 20-27 in Culiacán, Sinaloa. The road to the championship was a breeze for Tijuana as it took down Notre de Hermosillo (North Hermosillo, Sonora) in the final game 10-4.

In its first game of the series, Tijuana defeated Liga Tres Rios 12-0. On day three, Tijuana pitched a shutout taking the victory over Norte de Nuevo Laredo 7-0. Once again, the Mexicans continued strong through day four and five. In the quarterfinals, Tijuana beat Itson 4-2. Finally, its sixth win of the tournament was against Liga Muralla where Tijuana scored seven runs and only gave up one.

In eight days of the tournament and seven games, Tijuana gave up a combined total of eight runs and scored a total of 50 runs. Finishing with a 7-0 record.

Tijuana has made appearances in the Colt World Series in 1977 and 2016. In 1977, they fell to Austin, Texas and Honolulu, Hawaii. However, In 2016, they won the Colt World Series defeating Hoosier North, Indiana 6-5. Mexico as a country has been represented in the Colt World Series a total of 18 times.

Tijuana participated in the Mustang League World Series in 2015, 2017, and 2018. In 2017, Tijuana was the runner-up and in 2018 the champion. Tijuana made its first appearance in the Pony League World Series in 2018.

Tijuana will face Southern Illinois in Game #4 of the 2019 Colt World Series at 8:00 p.m. CDT/US at Rent One Park in Marion, Illinois.

European Zone Qualifier

Czech Republic wins the the 2019 European Zone Championship to make its fifth appearance in the 2019 Colt World Series

The Czech Republic (Czech Academy) defeated Holland U16 B 10-9, on Sunday April 28 in the 2019 Suma Colt European Zone Championship. The championship was held in Prague, Czech Republic. The Czech Republic will make its fifth appearance in the 2019 Colt World Series this August.

The final game of the tournament couldn’t have been between two better teams. The Netherlands came into the championship game undefeated with a 4-0 record. Meanwhile, Czech Academy had a 3-1 record.

However, The Czechs came out strong with scoring eight runs in the bottom of third inning to take the lead 8-4. The scoring started with a grand slam from Tadeas Zavadil. Followed by a wild pitch, RBI triple Dominik Polgar and an inside-the-park home run by Matej Vlach.

In the top of the sixth, Holland pushed through trying to save their undefeated record. Dave Pronk had an RBI single starting the comeback. Vincent Mevissen was able to knock two runs home on a single. Finally, Holland cut the lead to one run with an error by the Czechs. It turned out that the Netherlands couldn’t keep the momentum because they ended the game with a ground out and a strike out.

The MVP of the Tournament was awarded to the Czechs very own Milan Prokop. Also, the best pitcher was his teammate, Jan Konrad.

Earlier in the European Zone Championships, the Czechs were defeated in day one by Holland U16 C. The Netherlands came out on top with a 6-3 victory. On day two of the championship, the Czechs came back on fire, winning two games by a combined score of 22-2. Finally, day three Czech Academy continued their winning streak by beating out the Czech U15 team with a final score of 8-1.

The European Zone first became apart of PONY in the early 2000s. There are currently 24 countries that are a part of the European Zone. The Czech Republic made its first appearances in the Colt World Series in 2002. Since then, they have made appearances in 2008, 2015, and 2016.

The Colt World Series will be held August 2-7 in Marion, Illinois. The Czechs are set to play their first game on August 2 against the PONY North Zone Champion.
