Both Mexico's Bats and Pitching Shine in Win
Final Score: Marion, IL 0 Mazatlan, Mexico 10
Both teams conclude the tournament in a 10-0 mercy rule win for Mazatlan, Mexico over Marion, IL.
The game started out as a pitcher’s duel. Both starters were dealing in the early innings holding each offense to just one hit. Then in the bottom of the third inning a steal from Mexico’s Cedano sparked energy in their dugout and in Mexico’s fans. After the steal Mexico went on to score 4 runs on 6 hits with help of some sloppy defense from Marion in the inning.
Marion’s defensive woes continued in the bottom of the forth when a ball went right under the glove of left fielder Parker Holland, allowing Carlos Tiznado to round the bases and score Mexico’s fifth run of the game. The same exact play happened in the bottom of the 5th inning when the ball again found its way under Holland’s glove letting Angel Estrada to round the bases and score.
Mexico kept their hot bats going with Bernal’s double, followed by Villalobos moving him over to third, and scoring on Osuna’s sac fly.
The bats weren’t the only thing hot for Mexico. Starter Jesus Rios held Marion scoreless over 5 innings while only allowing two hits and collecting 11 strikeouts. Rios, who threw 92 pitches was substituted for David Armenta who continued right were Rios left off. Finishing the game with just one hit allowed and 0 earned runs.
This was a total team effort from Mexico. Their pitching shutout Marion and their bats just wouldn’t stop after the 3rd inning. Since this was a consolation game neither team will move on in the bracket. Congratulations to both teams on a great tournament!
